Barangay Ginebra Sanmiguel is reportedly
keen on reviving the trade talks that will bring the athletic big man Japet
Aguilar to the most popular ball club in the Philippines.
Reports say that the trade negotiations
will push through after the well deserved vacation of players and staffs of
Barangay Ginebra. Reports also said that
prior last conference’s semi-finals Ginebra tried to net Aguilar and Miller in
exchange for Taha, Espiritu and Labagala. Even the name of Kerby Raymundo
surfaced as one to be included in the trade offer but it did not push through.
Ginebra’s need for a bigman became evident
during the finals series against Alaska. Ginebra’s frontline of Raymundo,
Hatfield and Mamaril was dominated by Alska’s Thoss, Espinas and Abueva. Somehow
their frontline seems a bit ok with their import Venon Macklin but come Governor’s
Cup, Ginebra will definitely need to add a local bigman because the imports
limit on the season ending conference will only be 6’5’’.
One of Ginebra’s known leader and playmaker
Jayjay Helterbrand was once quoted saying “We are only a
piece or two to make this team formidable again. I think we’ll need a big man
underneath, that’s our waterloo for a long time now”
Reports also say that if the Aguilar talk
will not push through Ginebra might tap league veterans Erik Menk and Asi
Taulava who are both playing in ABL for SanMiguel Beermen. However while Erik Menk’s
return to Ginebra can push through without any possible problem, Taulava’s move
to Ginebra is still 50/50 because his former PBA team Meralco Bolts still has
the playing rights of Taulava. This means that any move to bring Taulava to
Ginebra will have to go through Meralco.
